It has to do with the currency here and with the value of the bills. The money here is called Guinea - Franc (GNF). The exchange rate is approx. 1 $ = 9000 GNF. Depending on where you get your money changed you get a bit more or less. There are 6 different bills...
100 GNF = 1cent
500 GNF = 5 cent
1000 GNF = 9 cent
5.000 GNF = 45 cent
10.000 GNF = 90 cent
20.000 GNF = 1,80 €/$
Der Höchstwert eines Scheines beträgt also 1,80€. Jetzt stellt euch vor ihr bezahlt im Supermarkt euren Einkauf in höhe von 30€ und ihr habt nur 5000er Scheine... da muss man dann einen ganzen Stapel Scheine dalassen :) ... oder ihr kauft was teureres wie ein Motorrad - da muss man dann mit dem ganzen Beutel Scheine anrücken :) schon lustig. So langsam gewöhn ich mich aber dran... komm nur manchmal mit den Beträgen noch durcheinander, da die immer so hoch sind.
So the maximum value of a note is around 1.80 $. Now imagine in a supermarket your have to pay an amount of 30 $ and you have only 5,000 bills ... then you have to leave a whole stack of bills :) ... or you buy something more expensive like a motorcycle - you have to show up with a whole bag full of bank notes :) It's funny. Slowly I get used to it ... but sometimes I still get mixed up with the amounts I have to pay, since they are always so high.

Hello Ruth, greedings from germany ;) looks really funny with the big packages of money :D Are the prizes for example in the supermarket high as in Germany? I would think for 10€ (114.856 GNF? :D) you will get a lot of stuff... isnt it?
