Ausflug auf die Insel / Trip to the island

Die erste Erkundungstour haben wir geschafft! Ich muss sagen, es war sehr interessant und auch ein bisschen krass zu sehen, wie abgeschieden die Leute leben. 

Leah und ich haben uns am Dienstag morgen mit dem Mann getroffen, der uns bei dieser ersten Tour begleitet hat. Wir trafen uns ab der Bootsanlegestelle, von wo aus man dann in die Dörfer fährt. Wir waren etwas zu früh da und mussten fast 3h warten, bevor es endlich los ging. 

We did it! We went on our first survey trip! I have to say, it was quite interesting and amazing to see how remote people live. 

Leah and I met Tuesday morning with the man who accompanied us on this first trip. We met at the port, from where you have to take a boat to get to the different villages. We got there a bit to early and had to wait for around 3h before we finally left.

Um in das größere Boot zu gelangen, musste man in ein kleineres Kanu steigen und dann auf das

Boot umsteigen. Das Gepäck natürlich auch. Wir hatten zum Glück nicht viel dabei, aber die Leute, die Großeinkauf gemacht hatten um es zurück in ihr Dorf zu bringen, hatten schon so einiges das ins Boot transportiert werden musste. 

To get into the bigger boat, you had to climb into a small canoe that connected the land with the bigger boat. The language as well. Luckily we didn't carry much with us but the people who come out to the town to do their shopping had of course quite some stuff that needed to be loaded. 

Für 4h waren wir dann in diesem Boot unterwegs. Wir sind am Rand gesessen und es gibt kaum genügend Platz um sich mal hinzustellen. Leute sitzen komplett am Rand entlang und in der Mitte liegt das ganze Gepäck. Zwischen dem Gepäck sind dann auch noch ein paar Frauen mit Babies oder Kleinkinder, die versuchen sich mit Tüchern vor der Sonne zu schützen.

The trip with the boat took 4h. We sat at the ledge of the boat. There was hardly any space that you could get up and stand for a bit, you just had to sit there. Most of the people sat around the ledge and they put all their luggage in the middle. Between the luggage there were also some ladies sitting with their baby or  little kids, trying to hid from the sun by covering themselves with scarfs or towels.

Wir haben an zwei Stellen angehalten bevor wir zu dem Dorf gekommen sind bei dem wir dann ausstiegen.

We stoppet at two other ports before we got to the one we had to get off.

Und dann kamen wir an unsere Anlegestelle an. 

Finally we arrived at our port. 

Wir mussten beim Aussteigen etwas aufpassen, damit wir nicht auf den, mit Erde gefüllten, Reissäcken ausrutschen. 

We had to pay attention to not slip on the Rice bags which were filled with dirt. 

Nachdem wir es also die Bootsfahrt hinter uns gebracht haben mussten wir vielleicht einen Kilometer laufen um zu ein paar Häuser zu kommen. Dort wurde dann zwei Leute angerufen, die Motorräder besetzten um uns abzuholen. Leah und ich sind zusammen bei einem hinten drauf gesessen und unsere Begleitperson ist mit dem anderen gefahren.

Es gibt auf der "Insel" (ist durch Flüsse abgetrennt, aber nicht wirklich eine Insel mitten im Meer oder so) keine wirkliche Straße. Nur schmale Pfade, auf denen man entweder zu Fuß laufen kann oder eben mit dem Mottorad fahren kann.

After that interesting boat trip we had to walk for about a kilometer to get to some houses. Once there we called two guys who came with motorcycles to pick us up. Leah and I went on one together with the guy driving and our survey helper got on to the other one. 

On the island (a certain area cut of by rivers, so it's not like a real island out in the ocean or something like that) there are no real streets. Just some paths, on which you can either walk or drive on with a motorbike.

of the motorbike and had to walk across. 

Wir haben eine Nacht in dem Dorf verbracht. Am Abend konnten wir schon mit unserer Arbeit beginnen und einige Fragen an den Präsidenten des Dorfes stellen. Die restlichen Fragen haben wir dann am nächsten Morgen gestellt und uns die beiden Dörfer angeschaut. Das lustige war, als ich  aufgestanden bin und zur Tür raustrat um mir meine Zähne zu putzen, saßen da 12 Männer in einer Reihe auf Stühlen die in meine Richtung schauten. Sie waren einige Meter entfernt, aber ich war schon etwas irritiert. Ich bin wieder rein gegangen und hab, Leah erzählt dass da die Männer sitzen. Aber es half ja nichts ich bin dann einfach wieder raus und hab meine Zähne geputzt... mit Publikum. Es stellte sich heraus, dass es die Dorfältesten waren, die gekommen sind um uns zu Grüßen und bei den Fragen zu helfen :) Ich hätte ein Foto machen sollen. 

We spent one night at the village. The evening we arrived, we could already start our work by asking the president of the village some of our questions. We asked the other questions the following morning and had a closer look at the two villages. The funny thing was, that when I got up and stepped out the door to brush my teeth, there were 12 men sitting in a line on chairs facing me :) ... they were a few meters away but it was still a bit intimidating. So I went back in and told Leah about the men. But there was nothing we could do, so I went out again and brushed my teeth with audience. 

It turned out, that those men were the elder of the village and came to greet us and to help with answering the questions :) I should have taken a picture.
